Google Summer of Code – Google Contacts API extension

As some of you know, earlier this year I agreed to mentor a Google Summer of Code project for writing an extension to integrate/sync Thunderbird’s Address Book with a user’s contacts stored in Google via the Google Contacts API. I forgot to blog about this once it was accepted, so I’m making up for it now.

There were about 9/10 submissions for the project, and I had a hard time working out which one to go for. The one I accepted was submitted by Josh (known on irc as pi).

Since then, Josh has already made quite a bit of progress on the extension and is providing regular updates on his blog. Josh has also started writing patches and test cases to help him get familar with the Mozilla community and the code base, and help us improve Thunderbird.

I’ll mention highlights here now and again, but if you want to follow progress, I suggest you keep an eye on his blog.

  1. Excellent. I’ve been hoping to see something about the status of this for a little while now. Can’t wait to see it functional.

Planning to support Tbird 2? Or 3.0 and later?

  2. I’m writing the extension for Thunderbird 3, but if there is enough demand I may try to add support for 2.
